Birth Moon Phase Calculator

Everyone knows their sun sign. Far fewer know whether they were born under a new moon or a full one — which, in the lunar tradition, says more about the shape of a life than the sign does.

The eight phases

Where a life sits in the lunar cycle, and what the tradition makes of each position.

New Moon

Born at the start of a cycle. Instinctive, forward-facing and often a beginner by temperament — you start more things than you finish and are rarely sorry about it.

Waxing Crescent

Born just after a beginning. There is a pull away from where you came from and toward something not yet defined, which can read as restlessness or as ambition.

First Quarter

Born on the building square. You are made for the resistance stage — decisive under pressure, impatient with deliberation, and prone to forcing a decision to get moving.

Waxing Gibbous

Born in the refining phase. Analytical, perfectionistic and rarely satisfied that a thing is finished, which makes you very good and slightly exhausting to work with.

Full Moon

Born under maximum illumination, Sun and Moon opposed. Life tends to arrive through other people, and self-knowledge comes from relationship rather than solitude.

Waning Gibbous

Born in the distributing phase. A natural explainer — you metabolise experience into something transmissible, and you are usually the one others come to for perspective.

Last Quarter

Born on the releasing square. There is a built-in tension between what you were given and what you intend to keep, and you tend to dismantle before you rebuild.

Waning Crescent

Born at the close of a cycle. Reflective, a little apart, and often carrying an ending that was not yours — with an instinct for what is finished before others notice.

Common questions

How is the moon phase on my birthday calculated?

From the angular distance between the Sun and the Moon along the ecliptic at the moment of your birth. At zero degrees the Moon is new, at a hundred and eighty it is full, and the illuminated fraction follows directly from that angle. It is geometry, not a lookup table.

What does my birth moon phase mean?

The eight-phase reading treats a life as sitting somewhere in a cycle. People born near a new moon tend to be beginners and instigators; people born near a full moon tend to find themselves through other people. It is a different lens from the zodiac, and it often lands where the sun sign does not.

Is a birth moon phase the same as a moon sign?

No, and they are easy to confuse. The moon sign is which constellation the Moon was in. The moon phase is how lit the Moon was — which depends on where it was relative to the Sun. You can be a Taurus moon born under a full moon, or under a new one.

What is a 'birthday moon' or lunar return?

Your natal moon phase repeats roughly every twenty-nine and a half days, so it comes back around thirteen times a year — not annually. What returns on your birthday is the Sun's position, not the Moon's. The two only coincide every nineteen years or so.
