Sun, Moon & Rising Sign Calculator
The big three is the shorthand: what you are becoming, what you are like in private, and what people meet first. Most calculators give you one at a time. This gives all three from a single form, and tells you honestly which of them your birth time actually affects.
The eight phases
Where a life sits in the lunar cycle, and what the tradition makes of each position.
aries
You arrive at speed. People read you as direct and a little impatient before you have said anything, and first meetings tend to go better than you expect.
taurus
You come across as unhurried and hard to rattle. Others treat you as steady on very little evidence, which is mostly convenient and occasionally a trap.
gemini
You present as quick, curious and conversational. People assume you know more than you have claimed to, because you ask good questions.
cancer
You read as approachable and slightly guarded at once. Strangers tell you things. You notice the mood of a room before you notice the furniture.
leo
You are noticed on entry whether or not you wanted to be. Presence reads as confidence, so people rarely check whether you actually felt confident.
virgo
You come across as competent, contained and observant. Others hand you responsibility early, which is flattering the first few times.
libra
You present as pleasant and easy to be around. The social smoothing is real skill, but it means people meet the diplomat long before they meet you.
scorpio
You give little away, and that reads as intensity. People find you either magnetic or unnerving, often on no more information than eye contact.
sagittarius
You come across as open, blunt and up for it. The frankness lands well far more often than it should, which has taught you to keep using it.
capricorn
You read as older and more serious than you are. Authority is assumed rather than earned, which is useful at work and tiring everywhere else.
aquarius
You present as friendly but slightly apart — interested in everyone, claimed by no one. People find you hard to place, which you tend to enjoy.
pisces
You come across as soft-edged and receptive. People lower their guard around you quickly, and you absorb more of the room than you let on.
Common questions
What are the big three in astrology?
Your sun, moon and rising signs. The sun is the sign most people know, taken from the date alone. The moon needs a date and place, and the rising sign needs an exact time as well. Together they cover identity, emotional life and first impression, which is why they are quoted as a set.
Can I find my moon and rising sign without a birth time?
Your moon sign, usually — the Moon holds a sign for about two and a half days, so a noon estimate is right roughly nineteen times in twenty. Your rising sign, no. The Ascendant changes sign every two hours, so without a time there is nothing to compute and a calculator that returns one is inventing it.
Which of the big three matters most?
They answer different questions, so the honest answer is that it depends what you are asking. People generally recognise their moon sign description fastest, because it describes the part they live inside rather than the part others comment on. The rising sign is the one that explains why first impressions of you keep going a particular way.
Why is my rising sign different on other sites?
Almost always a time-zone problem. Many calculators apply today's daylight-saving rules to a historical date, which shifts the birth moment by an hour and can move the Ascendant a whole sign. This one applies the rules that were actually in force at your birthplace on that date.
